Bruce Notley-Smith, Member for Coogee

BNotley-Smith

I have been a Liberal politician since 2000 when I was first elected as a Councillor to Randwick City Council. I served as Mayor for two years, from 2007 to 2009. In March 2011 I was elected to the NSW Legislative Assembly as the Member for Coogee.

This has given me a LOT of experience solving people’s problems, helping to get things done in our community, and making changes where necessary. Before that, I ran my own business. And before that, I was an Industrial First Aider and NSW Ambulance Officer. At the age of 15, I became a volunteer with the Randwick and District Historical Society and still have a keen interest in the history of the area. I have also long been a volunteer with the St John’s Ambulance Brigade, receiving a Commissioner’s Commendation.

I feel immensely privileged to have lived for virtually my entire life in Coogee, serving the people of East Ward on council for over a decade. My partner Paul and I have been together for nearly twenty years, and have developed a strong bond with both the place and its people.

My family originally moved to Coogee over eighty years ago – in 1925. They opened an electrical store on Coogee Bay Road, living and working in the community. My grandfather was a prisoner of war on the Thai-Burma railway and his wife – my grandmother – was the area commander of the Voluntary Aid Detachment (a forerunner to the Australian Army Women’s Medical Service). My own Dad, Alan, was a volunteer at the APEX Club who later also became president of Randwick Lion’s Club. My mother is a Life Member of the Parents and Citizens Association at Coogee Public School where my father, brothers and I all went to school.

Having such deep roots in the community, perhaps it was inevitable that I would end up running for office!

In September 2007, I was elected Mayor. Working full-time in the role, I made it a priority to be accessible, with an open-door policy and by providing my private email address and mobile phone number as my main point of contact for all of Randwick’s 127,000 residents.

Now, as the Member for Coogee I continue to be accessible and approachable. Please leave me a message on the Message Me page to get a public response, or email me at my office: coogee@parliament.nsw.gov.au. Visit the Contact page of this website for more contact details and don’t hesitate to get in touch.
