Supporting Eden-Monaro forestry jobs

Thursday, 02 July 2020
The Morrison Government is helping to create more forestry jobs in Eden-Monaro by making it easier for plantation and farm forestry projects to generate carbon credits and access the $2 billion Climate Solutions Fund.

Liberal candidate for Eden-Monaro, Dr Fiona Kotvojs, welcomed this announcement, as it will help to lower emissions and create local jobs.

“I’ve been advocating for this on behalf of the industry, who have really wanted it for some time, and I am so pleased to see it come to fruition.”

“This will be great news for the future of the industry and region, particularly after the impact of bushfires on forestry jobs, and many other businesses that depend on the industry”.

Before these changes plantation and farm forestry projects in high rainfall areas were largely unable to participate in the Emissions Reductions Fund.

The Morrison Government is reducing red tape for projects in the five pilot Regional Forestry Hubs.

These changes mean businesses can now earn carbon credits for establishing new forestry plantations. This provides an additional revenue stream to help incentivise projects, ensures more jobs in the region and provides a win for the environment by offsetting carbon emissions Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction Angus Taylor said the Government was committed to supporting forestry jobs by enabling the sector to participate in the Emissions Reduction Fund.

“Reducing red tape for projects will support regional jobs and investment, including in communities hard hit by last summer’s bushfires,” Minister Taylor said.

“This will make it easier for the private sector to invest in new Australian forestry projects, supporting jobs and reducing emissions.”
