Volunteers from the City of Canada Bay Men’s Shed have received $5,000 through the Morrison Government’s Volunteer Grants for safety upgrades.

Member for Reid, Dr Fiona Martin MP, said that she is proud to support the work of the Men’s Shed volunteers who give back to the community in many ways.

“When I first met the men who volunteer at the City of Canada Bay Men’s Shed, I was struck by their sense of comradery and their community focus. It was such a positive and inclusive space,” Dr Martin said.

“Their woodwork and construction projects give back to important local and international causes. I’m so glad that this funding will make their workspace an even more safe, productive and pleasant place to work.”
The funds will be used to improve the safety of the work environment in the principal workshop areas by replacing and relocating old equipment. This will improve noise levels and air quality in the area where the volunteers work.

Founder and Treasurer of the City of Canada Bay Men’s Shed Mr Norm Tate said that the 101 members, who mainly fall in the senior age group, are pleased to have this funding support.

“The focus of our organisation is on the betterment of men's health issues,” Mr Tate said. “This is achieved by engaging members in making and repairing activities using wood, metal, plastics and other materials.”

“The activities are for themselves or community organisations, where we have contributed to pre-schools, schools, churches, hospitals, council and clubs as well as individuals in need.”

Recently, volunteers organised a bushfire tool appeal to give tools and equipment to regional and rural Men’s Sheds impacted by the bushfires.

Mr Tate has said that the Men’s Shed members welcome the funding as it will provide essential improvements to the workshop.

“This grant will assist us to upgrade and relocate the dust extractions system in our wood machine section, creating a quieter, safer and more amenable environment,” Mr Tate said. “We thank Fiona for recommending this application on our behalf and her continual interest in the men’s shed movement."
