REID IS CELEBRATING NAIDOC 2020

Thursday, 12 November 2020
Dr Fiona Martin MP, Member for Reid, is pleased that NAIDOC Week events funded by the Australian Government are taking place across the local community and country to empower our First Nations People.

“This year’s theme, Always Was, Always Will Be., celebrates the enduring traditions and cultures of our First Nations people,” Dr Martin said.

“We are privileged to have one of the world’s oldest continuous cultures and through NAIDOC events we can share in this proud history and contemplate our future.”

SHINE for Kids Silverwater is being supported through a $900 NAIDOC Week Grant to run a tailored Belonging to Family program for Indigenous families.

SHINE for Kids supports children, young people and families with relatives in the criminal justice system to reduce the negative effects of parental imprisonment on children.

“The over-incarceration of our First Nations peoples is a serious issue with devastating intergenerational impacts,” Dr Martin said.

“I’m proud that the Morrison Government is supporting SHINE for Kids Silverwater by providing funding for this NAIDOC Week event, which will better empower Indigenous children and young people who may have a family member in the justice system.”

This grant is a part of the Morrison Government’s $1.4 million program to support local organisations to celebrate the week.
