NEW TRAINS FACE FINAL TEST AHEAD OF LAUNCH

Sydney’s newest trains are a step closer to carrying customers on the network with the first of 24 new Waratah Series 2 trains entering the final stage of testing this week.
 
Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Transport Minister Andrew Constance took part in a test ride today to experience the work being completed to prepare the trains, which will provide more comfortable and reliable services as part of the NSW Government’s $1.5 billion More Trains, More Services program.
 
“It is exciting to see the first of the 24 new air-conditioned Waratah Series 2 trains entering the final stage of testing,” Ms Berejiklian said.
 
“The NSW Government has delivered more than 30,000 additional weekly public transport services since 2011 and on top of that we are ensuring our customers ride in comfort.
 
“The delivery of these new trains means that all of our customers will be able to travel in air-conditioned comfort across the network.”  
 
Mr Constance said he was pleased with the progress of the Waratah Series 2 project, with nearly a quarter of the new trains now delivered and three in testing.
 
“The testing being carried out is to ensure all systems are operational and reliable before our first customers come on board with final checks being carried out on the electronic information systems, such as the internal and external CCTV,” Mr Constance said.
 
“Most of the testing has taken place at night and across the weekend to minimise the impact on customers, however, they will now start to simulate regular passenger services by making stops at stations.
 
“We are catering for the growing demand of people relying on public transport and it won’t be long until these trains start carrying customers in the areas where older trains are currently running. Priority will be given to services on the T2 Inner West & Leppington, T3 Bankstown & T8 Airport & South Lines.”
 
The remaining Waratah Series 2 trains will arrive in coming months with the full fleet expected to be in customer service by early 2019.
